Origins of Sensitivity
People with high levels of sensitivity usually share an increased receptivity to the processing of external stimuli, including an increased awareness of sounds, sights, movements, and light. In addition, they may possess highly sensitive physical functioning which manifests in ailments including auto-immune disorders, allergies, inflammatory disorders, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue or illness. But there is one element which is not universally shared, and which creates a division into two origins of sensitivity: that of intuitive or spiritual insight.
High sensitivity can be experienced as being linked to: unresolved chronic stress or previous trauma, heightened intuitive or spiritual sensitivity, or a combination of both.
Sensitivity can be a result of experiencing long term levels of stress, or unresolved trauma. Here, symptoms occur because of the physiological changes associated with arousal of the sympathetic nervous system. This stimulates changes to the cardiovascular system, hormones, adrenal function, muscular tension, and digestive function. When maintained long term, these changes can lead to chronic illness or fatigue, inflammation, and disease. In addition, people become hyper-vigilant of their surroundings. This is a protective mechanism designed to avoid a potential threat in the surrounding environment.
The most effective way of dealing with this type of sensitivity is to reduce the physical response by dealing with unresolved trauma and current sources of stress. This would usually include a range of health interventions: nutritional support, lifestyle changes, coping skills, relationship guidance, plus psychological and emotional support. As physiological, psychological and emotional stress is processed and decreases, the levels of sensitivity and related issues subside accordingly.
Intuitive and Spiritual Sensitivity
The second type of sensitivity is associated with people who have high levels of intuition or spiritual awareness. Many of the symptoms are the same: adrenal fatigue, increased allergies or auto-immune problems, and increased awareness of ones environment. Sometimes a person may develop high intuition following a period of trauma or dissociation, and in this case both aspects are present. Or a person may simply have been born as a sensitive soul, with a heightened nervous system. This will still lead to similar physical issues as that of someone living in a heightened stress response. The major difference is the approach, understanding and receptivity to the world that an intuitive person possesses.
Spiritually aligned people tend to view the world from a different perspective to the majority of the population. They see the world from a place of unity, where there is an openness to the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of others. There is a higher level of meaning to the actions participated in, more awareness of the personal impact on other people, and less tolerance for violence or conflict. This sensitivity is not based on fear, but because of a deep understanding of the consequences upon society.
Intuitive sensitivity is associated with a deepening spiritual awareness. When we become attuned to the feelings of others, and develop insight into the nature of the world, it is because we are in the process of acquiring spiritual wisdom. The ability to understand the nature of who we are within a greater reality.
The approach to learning to thrive with intuitive sensitivity is fundamentally different to that of someone who is primarily dealing with stress, although there are also overlapping features. In addition to the well-being plan for reducing stress, there is also a fundamentally unique path: that of deepening spiritual awareness, and learning how to live, and thrive, in a world which can seem overwhelming at times. It's a process of discovery on both a personal and spiritual level.
